Public Transport
There are two train stations close to the MCG:
- Jolimont (otherwise known as MCG Station) is north of the ground and offers a five-minute stroll through Yarra Park to the ground. From any railway station in the central business district, take the Hurstbridge or Epping lines.
- The other station is Richmond on the south eastern side of the MCG. It's a slightly longer walk to the ground but you can walk past the Punt Road Oval to the Shane Warne Stand side. To get to Richmond Station from the city, take any train on the Lilydale, Belgrave, Alamein, Glen Waverley, Dandenong, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Frankston or Sandringham lines.
Three tram routes provide access to the MCG:
- Route 75 (City-Vermont South) travels along Flinders St and connects with the eastern suburbs via Wellington Parade.
- Route 48 (Docklands/City-North Balwyn) travels along Collins Street and connects with the eastern suburbs via Wellington Parade. Both these routes stop just outside the MCG.
- Route 70 (Docklands/City-Wattle Park) travels along Flinders Street then detours via Melbourne Park and the tram stop is a short walk across the footbridge to the MCG.
Bus route 246 links Clifton Hill Station with Elsternwick Station in a useful service for patrons from the northern and southern suburbs. The 246 stops in Punt Road, just a short kick from the ground.
Vehicle Parking
Car parking is extremely limited at the MCG on event days, and the use of public transport is strongly encouraged.
Accessible parking is available in Yarra Park. Vehicles must display a valid accessibility permit to be permitted entry. Pre-paid parking is available to pre-book via Ticketek.
Buses travelling to the MCG can utilise parking space in the Melbourne Park precinct. There is a lift from the Eastern Plaza Car Park to the footbridge.
Please note that MCG staff and the G-Train Mobility Shuttle Service are not permitted to operate in Melbourne Park. Please seek appropriate support prior to your visit.
While bicycles are not permitted to enter the stadium, nor park on the MCG concourse, there are a number of bicycle hoops located next to the stadium in Yarra Park. For major events during the summer, additional bike parking facilities will be available in the western section of Yarra Park, adjacent to the cricket nets outside Gate 1.
Please note: These facilities are not manned by security personnel and it is the responsibility of the cyclist to secure the bicycle before entering the stadium.
Drop Off/Pick Up Locations
Patrons with accessibility needs can arrange to be dropped off by taxi (or a private vehicle with an Australian Disability Parking permit) at the bus turning circle (corner of Jolimont St and Jolimont Tce).
Please note: Vehicles without an Australian Disability Parking (ADP) permit, including pre-booked Ubers, will not be permitted to enter the bus turning circle.
All other patrons and vehicles without an Australian Disability Parking (ADP) permit are advised to use Clarendon St (near the Pullman Hotel) for their taxi, ride share or private vehicle drop off and pick up.
Pedestrian Bridges
The MCG is well serviced by pedestrian bridges that provide easy access to the stadium from a number of directions.
The William Barak Bridge, opened in 2006 in time for the Commonwealth Games, is a 525-metre bridge that provides walking access from Flinders Street station to the MCG. It rises from Birrarung Marr (near Federation Square) over Batman Avenue, the Jolimont Railway corridor and Brunton Avenue before descending into Yarra Park. The bridge links Melbourne’s fabulous sports and entertainment venues with the heart of the city.
The John Cain Arena (formerly Melbourne Arena) footbridge runs parallel to the Rod Laver Arena footbridge, extending from the MCG’s Gate 6 concourse over the railway corridor and descending into the Olympic Park precinct on Olympic Boulevard.
Due to redevelopment works at Melbourne Park, the Rod Laver Arena Footbridge no longer connects Olympic Boulevard with the MCG concourse. To cross the railway corridor from Olympic Boulevard, please use the John Cain Arena Footbridge.
Taxi Ranks
There are three taxi ranks located near the MCG for patrons to use as a safe and efficient way to hail a taxi.
- In front of Pullman Hotel, corner of Wellington Parade and Clarendon Street in East Melbourne.
- Outside Rod Laver Arena on Olympic Boulevard (previously known as Swan Street).
- For patrons with mobility issues, a taxi pickup and drop-off area is available at the Bus Turning Circle, Jolimont Terrace, before and after MCG events.
Road Closures
Brunton Avenue will be closed to through traffic for 90 minutes before the start of an event, and for 60 minutes at the conclusion of an event. This is to allow pedestrians to walk to and from Richmond Station in a safe manner.
